just wanted to give you the heads up on an internet bike vendor scam I've become aware of recently. the site is www.lcbikes.com or lambert camden bikes.

I was looking into buying something off them but then got suss and checked it out, and it turns out it is indeed a fraud, but a very professional one. they have too good to be true deals on some older models of road and mtbs. more info:
As I wasn't actually defrauded by them the authorities won't do anything, so I'm just trying to put it out there to as many cyclists as I can.

(Reproduced with the kind permission of Peak Performance Newsletter)

It's common practice for cyclists to stand on the pedals during hill climbs. However, few studies have investigated physiological responses of different body positions for competitive cyclists riding on inclines. Some research has found that cyclists were able to attain a higher VO2max on a cycle ergometer when they were allowed to stand up. In theory, standing may allow cyclists to use an increased muscle mass.

A study reported recently in the Canadian Journal of Applied Physiology investigated the effects of cycling body position on physiological responses during uphill cycling. Seven competitive road cyclists took part, each completing eight different trials, riding his own road-racing bike on an indoor treadmill.

Energy expenditure and heart rate were significantly greater for standing compared with seated cycling when the cyclists rode up a 4% treadmill grade. This trend was not seen, however, during steeper uphill cycling (10% grade). This may be because a change in ergonomics at the higher grade (more pushing and pulling force applied to the handlebars) may have added an additional energy expenditure when sitting, resulting in no difference from the standing position.

Thigh muscle discomfort while climbing is common for competitive cyclists. For the 10% incline, although physiological measures were equivalent for standing and seated positions, cyclists reported a lower perceived exertion for the standing position.

The fact that a higher VO2max was not found for cyclists using a standing position conflicts with some earlier research. However, previous studies have used untrained cyclists - in this case, a lower VO2 max while seated could have reflected undeveloped thigh muscles and relatively low thigh strength which would be compensated for by including more upper body muscular activity (while standing)

The results therefore indicate that for well-trained cyclists climbing moderate or low inclines, a seated position is the most efficient. For high inclines, standing or remaining seated are equivalent for efficiency, but standing just feels better!

Hi All

I have just signed up for a charity ride in Queensland. It is called Smiddy's challenge and in the past has been a 1600km ride from Brisbane to Townsville averaging 200km a day for 8 days with no rest days.

I may yet do the big one but at this stage have signed up for the middy Smiddy in late May which is 580km in 3 days, Brisbane, Toowoomba, Warwick, Brisbane.

I need to do some fundraising and as they have a good doco I thought it would be good to show what it is like for good to average cyclists to ride these sorts of distances.

I then started thinking of a pub crawl style ride the Sunday afternoon after the Canberra Tour. Something like sign up and pay $X and get a free drink at each pub, stop at one a bit longer and watch the 45 minute show and then move on to the next. Do a deal with the pubs to get discounted drinks and keep the profits.

Does anyone have any ideas to take this further? Would you come along?

Thanks

Coffee Coffee .Ninja 3 years ago never never drank coffee ,3 years ago she wasn't a Ninja either .
5 am starts will start to get to you ,4 days 5 days 6 days in a row so...tired ,but i need to train and beat all the commuters .Why do all the these cyclists go on about coffee and coffee shops .
Coffee i have discovered is the fuel of champions every morning before i get on my bike a little cup of coffee gos with me .
But to my horror i realised in the supermarket the other day i have become addicted yes i say i am a addict.
It started like any another day dragging my sorry arse down to the local supermarket to get grocerys for the week to feed Husband and kids as really you can't give them Macca's 7 days a week ,hey 6 days is ok .Don't want anyone thinking i am a bad mother .
Ok back to story pushing trolley wishing i was anywhere but here i see a sign ,Oh my god Coffee is on sale $3.00 dollars off the normal price and a large jar to and my favourite one ,my heart skips a beat .I race over grab the jar, hug it YES i say hugg...it .But instead of placing it in my trolley i looked around and put in under the grocerys so it was hidden from view in case a coffee stealer was stalking me .

Because COFFEE is so Preeeeecious...........
