Hi All

Well the last couple of years I have run a 3 day training camp in Jindabyne on the Canberra day long weekend in March. Lots of fun has been had as well as lot's of K's and some hills as well.

This post is to ask who might be keen to come along. We usually ride some of the biggest hills in the country. It is also a great way to start training for the Canberra Tour.

Put a post up if you are keen to come along.

At this stage I am not sure about my availability for it, Canada is calling me. Anyway if you are keen enough to organise it too let me know.

Thanks
MM

Milto,

I would give it a go, but couldn't confirm until my access arrangements for my kids are confirmed for the new year. If I am available I am willing to help organise things. :)

I am however the 3rd time champion of the weekend challenges, meaning that all the hills are now named after me.

Hello folks!

Vikings and friends are now booked at the Bungarra Alpine Centre (http://www.bungarra.com.au/) for the Canberra Day weekend training camp, 6-8 March.

Cost is $80 per person, same as last year. Accommodation is comfortable bunk-room style with plenty of space to spread out and a great kitchen (just note this isn't a B&B).

We can go with the same itinerary as last year, or if you have ideas for something different post them here or PM me. I'll post a final itinerary when we've settled on the details.

I expect some of us will want to cycle down, while others drive. Post here if you're driving and can help with transportation of people/bags/bikes.

It should be a pretty rad weekend - this area has some of the best climbs in the country and Viking are a pretty fun crew. Riders of all abilities are welcome, although for insurance reasons you must be a CA member through Vikings or another club.

Send me a PM if you're keen to go so we can sort out the dollars.

Steven

Folks - it'd be great to have all our dollars ready to go in the next fortnight; I'm following up via PM with those of you who posted here. I'd prefer to email you offline with bank details for transfers, but can make arrangements for cash or cheque if need be.

Daz. I don't have confirmed leave yet but I was talking to a friend of mine while riding sparrow today about a Dead horse to the Pinch. Long ride, firetrail but some pretty steep stuff. More water bars than you can count. The Pinch is about 50km from Jindy along the barry way.

Don't know if anybody else is in though.

Steven
01-02-2010, 02:40 PM
I guess it depends on transport. We need enough rackage for at least one road bike per person. Beyond that people may want to bring a MTB or track bike, I guess.

For those that haven't been to Jindabyne, it's a top weekend.

Last year we rode Charlottes Pass return on day one. Recovery (smashfest) ride/MTB on day two, followed by a track night which consisted of; points race, team sprint, individual pursuit, and individual sprint. Day 3 had us riding up Groggin.

There were some shattered souls by the end but fantastic fun.

I posted the profiles for the climbs last year and I think we had a handful of people pull out at late notice. Despite the risk I'll do the same again for the uneducated among us.

I'm still keen on this. So is Kersty, but she doesn't do dorm accommodation. Is there any private room accom at the lodge? If not, we'll stay nearby.

Also, I will have to do some track training up there. I was thinking of bringing my spare bike for anyone else who wants to come along and try a track bike out. (so long as they fit a 56cm frame). If there are others interested we could look at doing a set introduction to track session and I'll see if I can line up a couple of other bikes of different sizes.

Cheers

Hey Simon, there is at least one regular room, which I'm sure you'll be able to bagz, wouldn't he Steven?

And great idea to try a crazy track bike, count me in.

Simon, I'll ask the manager about the possibility of a private room and get back to you.

Personally I'm fine with dorm accommodation as long as I don't have to bunk with Jamie "Blown Pooper Valve" Young. Try sleeping through that racket.

Don't worry too much about holding the family room for me. Because I'll be deserting Kersty for riding (though she might come on a couple) I'm giving her the option of staying where she wants to. I suspect her choice is going to cost :(

Sounds like there could be some enthusiasm for a track tryout session. The track up there is perfect for that (i.e. not scary, like the Bundadome). If we do this it might be a good idea to work something out formally with the NSW facility for us to use it. No?

milto

They are happy to bill people after the event once you confirm numbers.

OK, the track option is sounding popular. Hold tight. I'll ask around to see what bikes I might be able to access...

...and I found out tonight that I might have to go to Sydney on the Monday for team pursuit training. But I could still come down for Sat and part of Sunday.

Let's see if we can get access to the track and some track bikes before making a final call.

Given the popularity of the idea, if this doesn't come off, how about we have a track try out day for Vikings in Canberra soon? We could either do it at the Bundadome (it only looks scary! and you can ride around on the duck board at the bottom which is flat) or the Queanbeyan, which is a flat track.

Cheers

Track bikes are great but maybe we should save them for the Canberra try out rather than trying to get all the extra bikes down there.

In the past we have selected a gear and not allowed people to change. It is usually a cog smaller for people with compact cranksets.

Agreed, and it worked a treat last year.

Also that track doesn't seem too safe to be motoring at 50km/h without brakes. The banks would be 1-2% grade? Surely not well equipped enough to wipe off speed and escape danger.

From memory last year it went something like this; take care of your own breakfasts and lunches. Saturday night we did a shared dinner, 6 or 7 cooks in the kitchen which worked well. Some did mains and some did deserts. Can't remember what we did for Sunday night? Either we ate out or did another shared dinner? Monday night we were all back in Canberra at home past out by 6pm. I tend to go over prepared but there's no LBS at Jindy so if you don't bring something you are up sheet creek.

bike (with 12-27 cassette and/or compact cranks!)
bike kit - at least two sets including warm winter stuff (I think it snowed one year or at least torrential rain)
helmet
street clothes (jeans, t-shirt etc)
spare tyre
spare tube(s)
chain lube

A heads-up about the weather: BoM forecasts (http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/nsw/forecasts/snowy.shtml) only go to Thursday; conditions are looking fine and cool (2 - 16C) but can be quite variable up there so pack appropriately.

I could use a lift for the weekend too, along with bag and bike (optimistic that I can ride). Is anyone leaving from northside towards the evening?

The longer range forecasts are suggesting rain for the weekend up there and cool so make sure you pack the warm clothes and wet weather gear for riding.

Good article Darrel, but I advise participants not to expect a professionally delivered training camp. There won't be professional coaching, and any drills we do will be from our own experience.

If a more comprehensive programme is demanded in future, I'll talk with Milto about how we can approach this. Obviously there would be a cost associated with this.

Holy moly!!!

14kms of horror.

Just talking to the coach and he's going to hold me back from the first 14km's of this ride. Feels a bit like cheating, missing the main climb then riding the rest of the way, but oh well. Coaches orders must be obeyed!

Sam
01-03-2010, 07:13 PM
Well that was an epic fail, the profile didn't come across with the quote. I was referring to the first 14km's of the Tom Groggin ride.

SueP
01-03-2010, 07:19 PM
Sam - do you mean the first bit of the climb out of Tom Groggin? The profile may only show one way, but we ride there and back which means we descend to the bottom, then turn around and climb back out (so read the profile for that day from right to left and then back again - the other profile is the right way left to right and then back again). If you don't descend it could be a long long wait for us to go down and come up again.

Sam
01-03-2010, 07:24 PM
Ok i'm confused. On the profile it suggests that the first 14km of the ride is the main climb?! This is how Steve read it too. Forgive my ignorance as I don't know the area at all.

Hoops
01-03-2010, 07:25 PM
Hey Sam, I've posted the Groggin climb in reverse order. So you actually start from the right hand side.

So if you were skipping the climb you either turn back whilst the rest of us descend and then climb back up it. Or, you'd be waiting around 2 hrs at the top for everyone to finish the climb.

Sam
01-03-2010, 07:26 PM
Ah just mapped it out myself and it makes a lot more sense now. The climb is in fact 1/2 through the ride and I'm guessing the base of it is where we turn around? I was slightly bemused when I though the first 14km out of Jindabyne itself was Groggin. Sorry about that. Will talk to Steve again now as it got him too!

hmm - wouldn't believe those temps at Thredbo though - rarely gets that warm!
Stick with the BoM site (9-12 on Saturday).

Best options are layers - base layer thermal next to skin, jersey and vest - warm but easy to strip off and carry if necessary. Will be cold descending so full fingered gloves will be a good idea to pop in your back pocket. For those of you not used to getting out in the mountains cotton is a big no no, if it gets wet (rain or sweat) and it gets cold/windy you will absolutely freeze (apology if I state the obvious but I've been skiing with people who should know better and have ended up with hypothermia)

Last year was a pretty casual weekend Jez....the itinerary was plastic and it tended to bend...kinda like the many fresh water rivers found in Jindy...

Food was cooked when we were hungry and had the energy....and we decided what we were eating on the night based on what everyone had brought. Trying to plan to much with this many people has a tendency to fail....Driving seems to be hard enough....

Ride times were generally planned the night before...depending on how everyone was feeling and wanted to wake up. As a guide I'd say if you arrived at the accomodation by 8am Saturday...we'd all still be getting sorted and eating breakfast.

We have the club trailer if we want it.

Do we want it? My view: yes. With it we have first aid kits for the support car, radios for the support car and each bunch (assuming slow and fast bunches), and traffic cones for fun stuff on Sunday. It also gives us more flexibility with bike/bag carriage.

Can we use it? Depends on whether someone has a suitable towing vehicle. I also think it'd be a great thing for us to make a gold-coin donation to the towing driver for the extra petrol it'll burn.

Thoughts? Drivers?

Hmm, I'm not so sure we need the trailer - unless there are more bikes than room in cars? First aid kits would be useful. Radio's?? - not sure on the range.

Not sure about multiple support vehicles for multiple bunches thing either - think we might be over organising?? Its really no bigger a ride than a SFP-corin or honeysuckle return and probably just as much traffic. I don't know how it worked last year, but the year before we ended up spread out getting up the mountain. As its an out and back if a group get to the end and its too cold to wait, then they will see the others on the way back anyway.

Don't get me wrong - I think having at least one car on the road is a good idea (we did have someone the year I went) and if we need one and if we have no full-time support drivers I'm willing to do 1/2 or 1/4 a ride (ie drive out and then swap with someone to come back).

No I was only suggesting one support vehicle, to trail whichever bunch Sam is in. It is a requirement for junior riders, and we do have a dedicated driver from Sam's family.

If we don't need the cargo capacity I'd still like to grab radios and a first aid kit from Stevo's in Chisholm on the way thru. Range on radios may be iffy but its likely better than mobile coverage.

Last year was similar to your experience Sue.

We were one bunch for Charlottes until the climb and then everyone went at their own pace as single riders. The decent was the same, people just went at their own pace with no substantial bunches.

Groggin was a bit different whereby we all rode as one group all the way to thredbo (the people who drove to the ski tube waited for the people riding the whole way), had lunch then tackled Groggin together and waited for everyone to finish. Everyone left to their own devices after that. I think i was finally pulling into Bungarra as half the people were on their way back to Canberra.

I don't think the trailer is necessary unless we can't get all the bikes down there. First aid kit is probably a must though.

For support. Last year Dwyer just left an hour or so after the riders and drove to the top of the hills and waited with food and clothes.
