View Full Version : Tour de Femme
The Tour de Femme is a female-only twenty kilometre ride that doubles as both a race and a participation event. It will be held on Sunday 8 November. Advance registration is required. Everyone who enters by the closing date will receive a T-shirt and a water bottle. It is not necessary to have a club or open racing licence to enter. Riders from teens to those in their eighties participate.

How does this work, not needing to have a CA licence?

Entry costs less if you hold a licence - I assume a day licence is given to those who don't have one.
Its not really a 'race', its a participation event - much like Blaney to Bathurst. I would say entry includes an insurance component, most likely the 'novicover' as per this link.

The front runners hardly treat it as a participation event though.
Please be careful everyone!!!
I am not doing it, after last year's disgraceful riding by many in the front bunch, riding across double white lines on Lady Denman Drive and Cotter Road.
I think I spent most of the ride reliving the crash of the 2007 Canberra Tour in my head, and yelling at people to get back onto the left and stop cheating/putting their lives at risk as I saw cars coming from the other direction. As per usual the commissaire did nothing when I spoke to him afterwards.
Be careful, stay left.

And if anyone needs any reminder of what can happen, or is new to cycling:

You should have heard Hoops getting stuck into a guy at Fitz's for going on the wrong side of the road to over take two places. It was quite hilarious.
I was a bit scared at Fitz's too. We were going up Fitz's as you guys doing the Epic were coming down and we had quite a few riders lazily drifting over the line as we climbed. I had a word or two and things seemed to tighten up a bit, but it could have been extremely ugly.

Our bunch was pretty good apart from that guy. Seriously, though! We've just had a minute of silence at the start line because someone died three years ago - what does it take for some people to wise up?!

Haha. In the end i was actually interested in the logic behind the move but seems he wasn't a very talkative chap. That sort of stuff really makes no sense.
Also note the change of course....
CHANGE OF COURSE
In order to keep the race as safe as possible there has been a slight change to this years course. Those of you who have participated in this event for a few years will be familiar with the course change.
Riders will now proceed through the tunnel on Parkes Way and instead of turning left onto Lady Denman drive, they will continue along Parkes Way until they meet Glenloch Interchange, where they will veer left out onto Tuggeranong Parkway. From here the race course will remain the same.
Riders will not follow Lady Denman drive through to the Tuggeranong Parkway.

Don't they hand out prizes at the end? I thought they did last year??

It' not a race, it's a "timed event"! Although, the first wave could well be a race, as the seeded riders are Cycling Aus members.

It is a race and participation ,if you read it correctly you would see this ,they have a front area for the first 50 seeded riders who every year include world and National champ's .

They do mention race quite a bit throughout the doco;
Start
The ride/race starts on Mariner Place east, next to Alexandrina Drive (near the Canberra Yacht Club) at 9am on Sunday 8th November. All riders should be present and ready by 8:30am.
The first riders to start will be the tandems, followed a few minutes later by the reminder of the riders. There will be a reserved area for seeded riders at the front of the start line. A larger area for all other riders will be behind the seeded riders. Please assist a safe event by lining up for the start at an appropriate place for your standard/ability.

aswell as a trophy for fastest time...
There is a trophy for the fastest total time for teams of four. If you have not already entered your team and would like to enter a team of four riders, please email your team name and the names of the riders to maryann@bikeshed.com.au by Friday.
Last year a break got away and stuck with Bilbys Jen Dixon and Bec Barwick? Is that Right?

Wow, a step has actually been taken to make it safer. Lady Denman was the worst section for rider behaviour last year, for me the scariest bit. I am impressed.
(I think this is what it used to be, but then they had switch to using Lady Denman because of the roadworks...?)
