V-Maxx coming to a bunch near you.
Thanks to Sparkles for building it up - it'd still be sitting in my garage in pieces otherwise!
I am available for custom paint jobs for those interested.....

I saw a single speed in Onya bike at Fyshwick in the front window it was all different floro colours but it had a flat handle bar ,not sure if that is cool or not .Or are you not allow to buy a bike , must you find a retro one and do it up? Simon where's the brakes.

It's much more fun to find a old beaut and do it up how good/bad you want.
Much more street cred too.
Shop bought, or at least off the hook just doesn't cut the mustard IMO.
This site is good for hours and hours and hours of inspiration;

just out of interest, how much does it cost to fix up a conventional bike to a fixed/single speed (nothing fancy)?
have you got an old frame/bike with horizontal drop-outs???? if so very cheap
if not, its more the time/hassle you need to spend to find one
dads got an old bike at home i was planning on taking off his hands at christmas. pretty sure its got horizontal dropouts. very cheap as in...?
the actual SS conversion sprocket ( correct me if im wrong Driver) is around $40, new chain $20.
then just so long as everyting else on the bike is good u r laughing.
to change to a Fixie, generally means two new wheels and they are upwards of $200
all money very well spent, i commute on my single and its awesome
hoops maybe Tom would like to sign up for " Single Speed thursday" that would then make two of us.....is two a bunch????
sounds good. just have to convince the old man he wont ever ride the bike again anyway so he might as well give it to me. not that he has riden it in the last 25 years.
if i get my hands on it, ill be back with more questions.

Hey this fixed gear stuff is sound more and more interesting, found this site on the web, sorry if it's old news but I found it a good read... http://www.sheldonbrown.com/fixed.html
I'm going to start looking for an old bike to convert. Also heard about a retired bloke in Yass who has made a hobby of doing up old bikes and then selling them to people for almost nothing... :)

Depends if it's a screw on freehub or splined - probably be a screw on if it's 25 yo. either way dam cheap to do, just need a little bit of know-how.
Sheldon is a good start but it helps if you've done a few to know the intracacies.
You prob don't need wheels - just use the 27 inchers that it comes with. You can still get tyres supa cheap and just use 700c tubes.
A new chain is nice too, but you could reuse the old peice-a if you are a tight*rse.

Lee- brakes are optional on a fixie but a must on a single speed.

Ok blonde question ,what the difference between a fixie and a single speed ,is one you can change the single cassette at the back?.Yes i could google it, but i would get a better answer here.
as far as riding it is the difference between freewheeling on a Single, or having your legs doin 200rpm coming down a hill ( like an exercise bike)
as far as building, they have slightly different thread on the rear cassette and it appears to be easier to convert a bike to SS rather than Fixie....and cheaper
as far as street cred, i think its Fixie hands down....thats what all the cool kids say anyway

Both have only one Gear with a major difference;
Fixy = fixed hub - the crank continues to turn whether you are pedalling or not - if you choose to stop pedalling at high speed expect serious ramifications
Single Speed - has a freewheel hub like your roadie so you can stop pedalling with no penalty

A fixie has one gear and is 'fixed', ie the pedals turn all the time the bike is moving - no coasting, like a trackbike... only a bit different in other respects, like geometry, can have brakes etc
A singlespeed also only has one gear, but utilises a 'freewheel' instead of a fixed cog (gear), so you can stop pedaling if you want. Brakes are a must because unlike a fixie you can't offer resistance to the pedals to slow yourself down.
