hahaha, I do like the Bayonet the Wounded call - alas it, much like our route, and setup of the Friday ride was stolen from the Bilbys.
I don't like that our ride that is named after this guy, it looks like he's drinking KB beer FFS!

Norm has been club mascot since Life Be In It helped buy the first TVCC club banner. He should be a life member.

Good point.

I think a lot of people like it too. You might need to conduct another scientific forum poll. Five options:
Really like Norman
Like Norman
Don't really care
Don't like Norman
Hate Norman
So long as you don't give the ride some wanky teenage boy* cool name, like the "Epic Ride of Super Fast Radness (Roar)"
*No offence intended to teenage boys.

Of all the terrible suggestions, this is the worst so far. Quite an accolade Tom when even "The Carl Sagan Memorial" was one of the options.
i guess i see your points, naming a bunch is far more important than actually riding it

wot if he is really in some other extra sensual world .... well wot if?
but the reality is the Sagan group had 3 drop offs. Simon N and I hung with the 3rd potential V Mob girlie. The Friday Sagan group is all about bringing the whole troop home (key some sort of SAS music) to the $4.50 large coffees at the newly opened PP. The menu should change shortly and you will notice some subtle alterations to the decor but the Sagan Groups motto remains unchanged.

An interesting definition of winning - I should point out that there were people in front of me at all the usual winning posts (tops of hills, end of sprints, etc)!! :vb_confused:
Nevertheless, I am happy to accept the decision of the judges and bask in the adulation of the crowd. :arms::wiggle2:

Does the Norman still offer up the traditional routes, or does it just follow the new 'recovery' loop?
unchanged Hoops. All the usual fun to be had.
We've just run a slow recovery loop only the last two weeks due to low numbers and/or high interest in a slow roll. Keen to offer something a bit harder for those who are interested over the usual routes though Hoops. We've probably only had 2 or 3 'fast' riders keen on this over the past few weeks unfortunately.

Hi guys, I'm relatively new to Canberra and have just been doing the occasional early morning ride b4 work. I'm up from 'sunny' Melbourne and looking to become involved in a regular group ride. Having said this, i've not been a club member and only just used to 'tagging' along whatever group happened to be available on my usual cycle route back home. wrt to the Friday Norman, do I need to already be a financial member to participate? Also, I avg about 25k/hr, i know, nothing extraordinary, but is this pace too slow for the friday morning grp ride? if so, any recommendations to join in elsewhere?
Rgds, John

Welcome aboard John! 25k not too slow, there are a range of speeds and to my understanding as its open to the public you don't need to be a member (although if you join you can race with us, and we are pretty friendly!!)
Come along this friday and say hi.

Sorry to poop the party Jay-em.
Also everyone please note:
The Friday Norman ride IS NOT an officially sanctioned Vikings Cycling Club ride. Please also mention that in the ride briefing.
To gain official club sanction, any training ride would have to enforce that all participants have a current CA licence.
The ride briefing should state that there is an element of risk associated with riding on the road and in a bunch. Any participant must accept this risk. All participants should have some form of insurance as offered by the CA licence. Such insurance is essential as in the case of an accident all club officials would be covered from personal liability because any rider involved would be covered by appropriate insurance.
Riders who do not have insurance cover or a current CA licence are putting club officials at a financial risk and therefore should NOT attend rides that could be construed to be organised by the club.
For any non-member wishing to join in with the Norman ride please contact our membership officer via email:
membership@vikingscycling.org.au
determine the appropriate CA licence for your riding (non-racing licences are available at a substantial discount) and undertake the necessary steps to purchase your CA licence before coming along to the ride.
As Rach says above, all new people are welcome to join our rides - provided that they have insurance - and the Vikings Cycling Club prides itself with having members at every stage of rider development who are happy to form groups with new members.
Regards and safe riding to all,
Simon Claringbold
President, Vikings Cycling Club ACT
Or put another way, Jay-Em mate, licences are ace, you should totally get one - cheapest and most valuable insurance you'll get. I'll even throw in a free ride with the Valkyries as a joining special since I ballsed up this thread with misinformation :)
Plus being a Viking is cool. Our raiding parties are the best.

"Cycling for All" licence: $77
'Cycling for All' is the term used by the UCI for recreational or non-competitive cycling.
Entitles fully insured participation in recreational and charity fun rides, club training & coffee crew rides, grand fondo style rides and club skill development & introduction to cycling activities.
Does not exclude the use of timing in a non-competitive participation format.
Provides the same 24 hour insurance cover while on the bike as Racing and Sport categories with the exception of events limited to Racing and/or Sport categories, for which this member category is not entitled to participate in.
Nicely played there Rach. (Computer says I can't give you anymore pos rep. Darn computer.)
Damn! I'll make a note to say something extremely funny/witty in about a week so you can give me a pos rep then.
;)
Interesting Simon - would the 'cycling for all' licence allow participation in our 'sportif' category on race days?

No.
From CA website:
Cycling for All...provides the same 24 hour insurance cover while on the bike as Racing and Sport categories with the exception of events limited to Racing and/or Sport categories, for which this member category is not entitled to participate in.
A Sport membership...allows for participation in events that are timed whereby finishers may be placed in order of finishing time; however, they are not awarded prizes or recognised on the basis of those placings.

John, check this out, think it is what you are looking for;
http://www.canberracyclingclub.org.au/event_details/?IntCatId=22&IntContId=817
I'll stipulate - these are not CCC rides, full-public-bunch-ride, but if you are a nov you will want to sit out the back and see if it is suitable pace etc
Prob should add too - forget about the Tues ride if you are a nov. In order of pace/difficulty it'd be from slowest to less-slow;
1) Friday 'southside bunch'
2) Wed 'southside bunch'
3) Sat 'Bakery'
The Wed and Sat rides develop into a fairly A grade 'gallop' in the last 1/4 of the ride, you can just drop off the back like many do if it is beyond you.
The Fri bunch is flat and has a nice little windup and short sprint at the end, good for novs.
