Report by Mark Phelan

Edward Bissaker, Mitchell Lovelock-Fay, Jackson Law and Jordan Kerby
took out the Junior World Championship in the Team Pursuit just after
5 am local time this morning.

In a world class time of 4:05.209 the Australian Team lead the final
from the first lap to take a commanding win over the Great Britain
Team (4:08.402)

Considering Australias lead pursuit rider Dale Parker could not front
the start line as he was still in hospital suffering from dehydration
the result is all that much sweeter for the team. Mitchell
Lovelock-Fay stepped into the team for Dale and the team did not
flinch nor depart from it's origional plan and executed both the heat
and final to perfection.

Well done to the boys, excellent result.

Follow up,

During the first days competition in the Individual Pursuit, both Dale Parker and Mitchell Lovelock-Fay represented Australia, Dale Top qualifying with a 3:15.752, Mitch 5th with a 3:20.962 (nearly identical time to his ride at the Australian Championships). Dale in the final faded in the last km to win the silver. Dale was immediately taken to hospital with dehydration. As Dale was the planned lynch pin for the team pursuit the next day the Aust team had prepare for the fact Dale may not ride.

Race day and Dale was still in Hospital, Mitch had been brought into the team with Ed, Jackson and Jordan. The Australian team did not change tactics despite the shuffle in it's line up and the 4 faced the starter, 2nd last to ride in qualifying. Great Britain had set the fastest time with 4:09.342 up till then, Australia came in a fraction behind the GB Team with a 4:09.567, an excellent result given the last minute change to the line up but then a nervous wait while Russia qualified. Russia set a 4:12.908 for 5th place. Australia into the Gold medal ride!

So Australia was to ride GB in the final. It was still not known if Dale would be fit to ride so it was with anticipation the Australian supporters waited to see who lined up for the final. Dale was still in hospital so the qualifying 4 lined up, Ed starting them off with Jackson, Jordan and Mitch. From the first KM the Australians had a second lead that continued to grow for the entire race.

Now given the broken wrist and collarbone Edward suffered prior to Worlds, only being able to ride a bike days before they went into Worlds Camp just weeks before competition, add in Dales illness, Mitch stepping in for Dale in the TP and performing so well, the Team result is such a good one and shows the depth and quality of Australian cycling where the team is bigger than any one individual rider.

Very happy!

Other news

Amy Cure rode a World Record in the Individual Pursuit (2.22.499) and followed it up with a 2.22.829 in the final to take Gold.

The Girls Team Sprint won Bronze

In the men's sprint Matthew Glaetzer qualified 2nd with 10.375 (German TQ 10.304), Maddison Hammond qualified 6th with 10.533, Jamie Green 34th with an 11.023. Fast times for U19's

Down to the final 4 and the Australians are against each other to see who rides for gold, in the other heat it's two Germans. At least 1 Australian will ride for Gold, anyone's guess who.

Still lots to go so it will be interesting to see who lines up in the male endurance events as Dales illness has changed all the combinations and entries previously decided on, hopefully giving yet more opportunities to the Canberra boys.

Well done to Mitch and Ed, rainbow jersey. Mitch is a great guy, he stepped in to help out our Masters team whilst we were training for the NSW Master track champs earlier this year when we were short one rider for our number one teams pursuit team.
