Great race everyone - here's the preliminary results :
VIKINGS CYCLING CLUB
SUNDAY HOMESTEAD SCRATCH RACE– 10 AM 27 JUNE 2010
60 competitors including 12 visitors from the Illawarra Cycling Academy testing their legs before the DBR came out in lovely sunny weather and only a slight head wind up the false flat,.
The juniors did 10 km up and down the false flat accompanied by Mark Stevenson – great racing by Johannes Beitzel showing great form finishing almost two minutes in front of Sari Mitrevski from the Illawarra Academy. Kayla Stevenson coming in third and second girl.
Sue Powell showed D grade why she’s a world champion, no jet lag there as Rob Fisher, Sue and Danny Chak sprinted for a photo finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Looks like Lee Sheather could be returning to form in time for the DBR, she was the second woman over the line in the D grade race, with Bridget Mullany and Josie Talbot also from Illawarra equal 3rd for the women.
Barely a minute separated Kane Piper and Mathew Larkin at the pointy end of E Grade, watch out for the club handicapper guys. Ross Robinson was also looking strong and was third only 3 minutes later. Lara Batkin of Illawarra Academy was fourth and the first girl in the E grade race.
A and B grade raced together and wasn’t that interesting? Two A grade boys sprinted for first - Mitchel Lovelock-Fay just pipped at the line by visiting Illawarra star – Caleb Ewan, Mitch is sure to have his eye on him this weekend in the DBR. Next over the line was a speedy B grade threesome who gave us an exciting finish – taken by Tom Behrens over the line 1st, but Sam Sautell and Phil Jermyn were close on his heels and barely a second behind him.
The girls were all over C grade – Bec Doolan and Sam Hemsley were first hotly pursued by Bradley Hefernan, Ed Pellegrino, Mark Toya and Laura Meadley – who chased them down with only seconds between them.
The tandems were really keen today, deciding to do two laps – Kerry and Brandie looking good and finishing a minute before Jing and Elton. Rosemary and Cameron thought one lap was enough and called it a day. A few others found one lap enough and pulled the plug before the second lap. Kudos to Katherine Huckstep who completed her race despite fixing a flat and stopping for a top up with the track pump at the turn around.
Great racing everyone – many thanks to Mark Stevenson for bringing out the trailer, setting up, putting away and racing with the juniors. Ingrid Kimber, Andrew Thaller, Shridevi Vasudeva, James Fisher and Oliver Thearle provided wonderful marshall support – much appreciated all!
