Darwin June 14th to 16th:

Chris Loynes, President of the Darwin Cycling Club calling (well via e-mail anyway). How is everything going in Canberra? Getting rugged up for the winter months? We are just coming into the dry season so I can put the wet weather gear away and take the flotation devices off my bike now the rain will stop soon (had about 2 inches this morning in a 2 hour period!)

We are in the process of revitalising the Top End Tour, it's been in the doldrums for a couple of years, and this year local businesses have really got behind us and contributed $10 000 for prize money. So we are trying to encourage interstate riders to once again make the long trip North (not as long now though as Qantas run flights direct to/from Canberra) for a quick winter break and enjoy Darwin (and cycling) in the dry season. We have some decent prize money up for grabs but the emphasis is on having fun.

The race will be held 12th-14th June. Format is:

12th - Prologue and road stage.
13th - Road stage and a criterium
14th - Final road stage and finished by lunch time

It's a graded race, based on ability ( riders will have to be honest on their ability and we may seek some help from State/Club Handicappers), men's grades A to C. Ladies are also welcome, depending on their numbers they may race in a separate grade or in amongst the men's grades. Prizes will be mainly for GC placings.

Profiles. If you've been to Darwin before you will remember it's flat. Our steepest hill would be 7-8% for about 30 seconds.

More details will be released on our website www.darwin.cycling.org.au. In the meantime would you mind circulating a copy of an invitation we've prepared?

If you've got any questions please give me a call. Thanks Simon.

Best wishes,

Chris Loynes

Maybe - the idea of a 'flat' race is pretty appealing to me...gals?

I would be up for it if enough other people from vikings are going

Same here. Racing somewhere flat sounds kind of novel.

Well, we've got 4 interested so far. Others? Come on, you know you want to.....

We could do what we did with the Alpine Classic this year, and make a week out of it.

I think you would all find the temp's in Darwin would knock you around ,and performance willl not be as good unless you start training in a Sauna.

If anyone was considering doing the McDonald's classic in Wagga you will need to make a decision as to which one you go to as it is on the same weekend.

Doh, I did the McDonald's classic last year & came away with prize money ($100) & had a great weekend...it is much closer & also a pretty flat race....

mmm. I'll take the McDonalds classic for sure. Not too sure 'flat' is the right word for the saturday race, in fact pretty dam sure I'll call it 'rather undulating'.
