(Has this already been posted? I've been a bit out of touch lately, I couldn't see a post but if there is one already then this can be deleted). (Also is it weird this is being supported by Triathlon ACT and not Cycling ACT?).

Sunday 14th of March join the Amy Gillett Foundation and Triathlon ACT on the inaugural Amy’s Ride Canberra. Starting and finishing on Federation Mall and taking in Stromlo Forest Park and beyond, there are options for riders of all ages and abilities.

By participating in this ride you will:

* Choose from 30km, 65km and 110km challenges all starting and finishing on Federation Mall below Parliament House
* Challenge yourself to the hills behind Stromlo Forest Park around Uriarra Crossing and Coppins Reserve
* Look out for the Epsom Studios photographers and get your photo taken on the ride - come back to the website after the ride and you can you find yourself and order a photo ($2 of each photo is donated to the AGF)

BTW the metre matters campaign was launched towards the end of last year, see here for more details:

http://www.amygillett.org.au/a-metre-matters-2/

"The Amy Gillett Foundation has launched a new campaign urging cyclists and motorists to be more vigilant in leaving at least one metre between them when sharing the road.

The catch-cry forms the Foundation’s new community service announcement, which encourages motorists to allow at least a metre’s space when passing cyclists. It is also the name given to the inaugural Melbourne – Canberra Ride, which commences immediately after the launch."

Looks like we'll have a gang. There is the option to set up a fundraiser for this - shall we just set up one joint one for V-Mobile?

Preferably someone else can take the lead on that for me.....

I think you get Oakleys or discounts or something if you raise a certain amount we could donate them or raffle them off for the next fundraiser - likely to be getting Mitch to Worlds this year!

I'm also down now for 110, i'm not up for a doddle but there will be groups of all abilities around.

In terms of jerseys, if they do hand out the AG jerseys on the day - I think we should wear them as it will be good for media/photos etc if everyone's got the AG jersey on. Failing that Vikings jersey. Maybe i'll wear a tri suit to piss of C-Bold!

Was a great event to be sure. I had a great time and the bunch was working well despite sticking me in the cave of pain on a few ocassions. I'm told an average of 31 which is a reasonable click for that distance. Was great seeing all the vikings come over the line... although I lost track of Gribble (did you get home OK Chris??). So much fun that the Vet riding with us was convinced to sign up with the Vikings next opportunity he had!

It was a bit sickening and disturbing to see a few cyclists make a mockery of the whole show. That cyclist passing a car that was passing the bunch up Coppins going over double lines was not just bloody stupid but extremely embarrassing.

Embarrasing, but the hail of abuse he copped from the other cyclists was magnificent =D

Was he the same guy that was sitting out in the traffic the whole way down William Hovell? If not he was a PITA too.

Good ride. I almost pulled out at SFP on the first lap. I went out a bit hard on the first lap, attacking up Coppins Crossing may not of been a good move...

I wheel sucked some guy most of the way along the Homestead false flat on the first lap, but I was stronger than him on Mt Mac and he faded away. Second lap another guy passed me going up Uriarra and I managed to suck his wheel all the way along false flat and also Mt Mac and probably would of got a tow up from Cotter as well but he pulled into the Cotter camp ground presumably for a toilet stop. Caught another small bunch at Casurina, most of them looked like slower 65km riders but one guy stood up and took off so I went with him, hoping to repeat my wheelsucking that I had become so good at, but he faded shortly after and I was riding by myself again. I kept picking up other riders going up the hill but none of them were strong enough to work with me. So I was pretty much solo back to the start.

Pretty tough ride, I would rate it a 4 banana ride!

It was actually quite a good ride. I dished out some scathing sarcasm to riders over the double yellows on the first pinch out of Coppins, I waited and squirted past the blockage bunch on the broken lines before the final pinch. I didn't actually realise that the group of us over the top of the last Coppins rise were the first bunch on the road. The bunch contained Tony and Tracey Gaudry, Phil Anderson - on his Malvern Star Oppy - and a few others. We pretty much kept the gas on the whole way around and back to the start. Although I started about 3 minutes behind the first bunch as the organisers were trying to break up the bunches on the road, I finished with about 10 others in the first 110 bunch to come in. Actually I couldn't help myself and pulled a victory salute as I just happened to cross the line first;)

It was a really good ride - I was a proud Prez today. I think the Vikings are doing an excellent job in engaging with the Canberra community. Well done to the Vmobilers for suggesting we take up this cause. I felt a bit embarrassed for the other Canberra Cycling Clubs - they made either no effort to support the event, or didn't even know it was on.
Congrats to all the Vikings that went along today!

14-03-2010, 09:09 PM
Despite being seriously knackered I had a great time out riding with everyone again. My legs started to tire up the Uriarra false flat and I knew then that I wasn't going to make the 110. Rob, James, Jez and others kept me going with some encouragement but by the time I got to the Mt Stromlo turnoff my legs were completely shot. I kept going after SFP, had to have a rest and some more snacks up Cotter rd by the Horse farm and peddled on being passed by guys on MTBs and 1 Metre Matters t-shirts on Adelaide Ave - Not my finest hour.
By the time I was turning into Parliament House I was starting to cramp up in just about all the muscles in my legs but made it to the end to get my Powerade, Winners Bar and a Coffee.
After a bit of a rest I had to get back home so I tootled off back down Adelaide Ave and Cotter road passing all the Vikings finishing their 110kms and all looking pretty good.
Catch you all Friday morning when hopefully my legs, knees and sit-bones have recovered!

Well done all - especially ABC's big return from injury.

Sadly 60 minutes last night just kept firing up the anti-cyclist sentiment. Although the two idiots they chose as representative cyclists did nothing to help. Nothing like going on channel nine and picking out tradies and mothers as the worst drivers on the road. That'll win us some support.
